Reading that makes me glad I work in a government research lab. I've watched the faculty in my department at U of Colorado deal with these workload issues. The seven years from first hire to tenure is an excruciating amount of work. And then department politics can easily hamstring your efforts.

I've also been wondering about going back to industry. My current salary (which is pretty damned good for an ABD PhD Candidate) is the same as it was in 1995. Even after I finish my PhD, it will likely be seven years before I match my 2000 salary. I could probably make double my current salary by going to work for the satellite imagery company next door to my neighborhood.
