More seriously, the problem seems to happen when you short the two metal strips in the lower left corner of the phone, the upper left strip is apparently the BlueTooth/GPS/WiFi antenna, the lower right strip is the 3G antenna.
And there are reports that the iPhone 3G has the same problem, which could explain some of the stuff I've been seeing.
