The History of Cartography has a tragic backstory. JB Harley, co-author of Vol 1
and Vol 2, Book 1, tragically died of a heart attack. He was advising the
dissertation of one of my colleagues at the time. David Woodward met a similar
fate during Volume 2. The
David Woodward Foundation site has a nice history of the development of The
History.
While JB Harley was primarily a cartographic historian, he also essentially
created the field of Critical Cartography which applies post-modern critical
theory to the art/science of cartography. A good primer is Harley's posthumously
published The New Nature
of Maps. Harley's seminal article was "Deconstructing
the Map".
