Variable speed limits

Drivers help set variable speed limits along I-80 in Wyoming

If there are surface or visibility problems, the center’s supervisors slow down the traffic.

Garcia said the driving conditions are safer when everyone travels at the same rate of speed.

If some drivers are traveling 55 mph and others 80, the goal is to pull the outliers into a middle speed, or a pace speed.

Officer: "Son, did you realize you were going 80 miles per hour?"

Dude: "Why yes. That's what the speed limit sign says."

Officer, glancing at the electronic speed limit sign. "Says 55 to me. How about you step out of the car."

Never admit to a cop how fast you are going. An assistant district attorney friend said in much less polite language to a another friend she was educating about getting tickets. I don't know is safe and not a lie. After all the cop probably didn't ask if it was relative to the road, the earth, the sun or the galactic core.

Many years ago speed limits on new roads and curves were often set by how fast 85% of the drivers rode without limits being posted. Now there are undoubtedly more regulations about that sort of thing.
