Anyone with an opinion on the Duck Dynasty guy who hasn't also weighed in on the David Guth/University of Kansas thing can just shut up.

The Atlantic: The Real Duck Dynasty Scandal: Phil Robertson's Comments on Race.

Which would be interesting if it didn't reveal a certain northeastern naivete from the editors of The Atlantic. Dude's from the South. Of a certain age. Hell yes there's all sorts of that there.

And that's a good portion of why A&E was able to make money with him. It's gratifying that they think they can't now that he's expressed his opinions on homosexuality, but, really: A&E offered up a freak show, people tuned in.

And if you don't know who David Guth is, the University of Kansas suspended Guth, a tenured professor, for an outraged tweet critical of the NRA after the Washington Navy Yard shootings.

In both cases it was morally corrupt organizations exploiting people for entertainment purposes, who later discovered that without careful monitoring of message they could lose dollars from the entities funded those circuses.

I don't recall where I heard it, maybe Fark.com, but let me paraphrase: If you put someone on TV because they're outrageously redneck-y, and they say something outrageously redneck-y, don't act all surprised.

He was being true to himself and his public image... he was consistent and honest about his beliefs. And he'll get picked up for some narrower segment show by some other network or get paid for speaking engagements and public appearances. Heck, he may have helped the show overall.

I've watched about 45 minutes of Duck Dynasty while stuck in a hotel room, mostly because it was all that was on in English, and with the perverted pleasure of watching a train wreck in motion, eyes wide open in shock and awe.

My money's on him becoming a Fox News commentator.

Yep, it's all performance art: Some great before and after pictures of the Duck Dynasty people.
