Pretty sure this 2 factor auth thing

Pretty sure this "2 factor auth" thing is just an excuse for every site on the Internet to demand our cell phone numbers. Grrr.

Yep It Is.

This particular one was spurred by the time card app that $WORK uses wanting to do 2FA. Like someone's going to go in and submit bogus vacation requests for me or something.

Or, I don't know, maybe this is a real harassment technique. It just still feels weird.

yep. I'm continuing to refuse all these nags, because denying them access to my phone is still more important than whatever nebulous security benefits they think they can offer me, which I am not going to trust in the first place.

If the day comes that one of these services makes access to my phone number mandatory, I'll just give 'em the finger; there's nothing on the Internet worth that kind of hassle.

I've been refusing 2FA that wants to use my phone, especially from work. My boss had his phone remote-wiped by mistake by IT yesterday, and he's now facing a huge amount of hassle because of it. The only way they'll get access to my phone (and work's 2FA thing requires that they also have the capability to remote-wipe, so that they can shut that down in case you lose the phone) is if they start paying for my phone.

But then I'm approaching the point where I may quit carrying a phone entirely. It's more hassle than convenience, and email works better for me. "Can I have your phone number?" "Don't have one." I expect that'll be interesting.

Two years without a phone here. There are some times it's frustrating (running late to a meeting), but not being available 24/7 is more than worth it. Related, have you noticed that wristwatches are becoming popular again? I suspect that in five years, carrying a smartphone will be a marker of the lower classes and children.
