Apple's mystery beast

2002-01-03 23:43:08+00 by Dan Lyke 20 comments

There's some speculation from Dave Winer and Tom Negrino (and Dori Smith in other entries) about the upcoming announcement Apple is supposed to make at MacWorldExpo, that's being hyped as "Beyond the rumor sites. Way beyond.". Crazy Apple Rumors posits "sexbots" (from Dori), which is appealing, but I think it's going to be an iGinger[Wiki]. Think about it, a Segway which uses some obscure bleeding edge but unlikely to be widely adopted protocols to draw power off your PowerBook[Wiki] batteries, thereby being cute and slim.

[Edited to Tom Negrino from Dori Smith. Doh! Lack of sleep shows through, I really was trying to get that right after my earlier screw-up]

One small correction: that first link to me should actually say "Tom Negrino."

Considering that Tom's been posting more than I have lately, it's interesting how many people just assume that everything is from me. Let's just say that you aren't the only one, by a loooong shot.

No no no...it will be a Segway with a translucent cover and no difference on the inside...

I'll hope for the sexbots instead. At least that'd be interesting.

Cynical outsider prediction: they'll put something like a flat screen or a faster CPU in an existing model and hype it as revolutionary. Yawn.

Dori: Aaaaugh! Lack of sleep, must have been. The 2 AM bed-time this morning. Because I specifically said "This time I'm not going to screw up the Dori/Tom thing".

Sigh.

Mike: Yeah, that's what I'm expecting. Or a $1400 PDA that plays music.

That Iwalk video is from the same people who've pulled other Mac hoaxes in the past.

Cam pointed to a MacSlash debunking of the iWalk videos.

Doh! I guess I've been spoofed. I guess I'll keep macilliterate yap shut. I'm crestfallen to find out all stories on slash dot are not true.

pete: uh, so we can doubleclick really fast by rolling two fingers across the buttons? Macs don't exactly *need* more than one button...

For that matter, the newer mice don't have any buttons at all. You just sort of click the mouse body.

Mars, nowadays when I'm on a system with a mouse that has less than 5 buttons (ie: the 3 axiis of the scroll wheel plus the other two) I feel like my mouse hand is underutilized.

Different strokesclicks, I guess.

Saturday's bit of hype on Apple.com is "Full speed ahead: Lust Factor Ten". Maybe the sexbots thing might be right...

Mars - It's a, I say it's a joke son. Don't cha get it? You're built too short, the good ones go over yer head. Ya got a hole in yer glove, boy, I keep pitching them and you keep missing them. Ya gotta keep yer eye on the ball, son. Eye. Ball. Eyeball. I almost had a funny there. Joke, that is.

Well, we'll know in a few hours, but at the moment my earlier prediction seems to hold. Of course the hardcore Apple fanatics are saying "naw, they leaked the unimportant news to Time, the big news is still a secret."

Pete: Bwahahaha...haven't seen a text Foghorn Leghorn in a while, although you might consider some delicious decaf alternatives as you seem a bit worked up about this Iboob.

Too much Fark in the morning.

They've announced it! It's a... a... an iMac with an LCD display. Oh. Wow. Thanks. That's just what I wanted, Steve. So much bigger than the rumor sites. Yeah. Did you say this thing came with a receipt?

Dori thinks it's an iLuxo.

Okay, it is kinda cool that you can get it with video editing software installed, but I've been through the hell of old Macintoshes, and I'm much happier to take my pain up-front.
