Suter Falls with icicles

2002-03-06 08:59:40+00 by topspin 8 comments

Savage Gulf and other TN State Parks are technically closed on Monday and Tuesday because of budget cuts. I forgot and drove up to Gruetli-Laager to hike a bit.

There was a sign reminding me about the State Parks being closed, but also a specific sign saying the Collins West trail section was icy, dangerous, and closed.

So, I went in anyway, but only down to Suter Falls [ large view ] where the falling icicles and treacherous trail persuaded me not to risk life, limb, and a citation from a ranger.

Stop it! You're making me home-sick.

Since one of my projects today is buying some filters, might I suggest a cheap polarizer (do some test shots in the camera store, you might not even need a circular polarizer for the S100) and/or a graduated ND filter that you can hold in front of the S100 to try to get a bit of detail in the sky?

(Yeah, I know, lugging that stuff starts to mean that the S100 is no longer the easily portable device it once was, which is why I haven't been carrying those toys for mine).

Aight, Dan, let's see if this one, taken on Amnicola Highway, makes you any more homesick.

Giggle. I can tell ya fer damned sure there isn't an S&M lumber out here. Or if there is, it doesn't sell hardware errr... power tools ummm... lumber.

Gotta agree about the filters and I probably have a polarizer around here. There's lots of room in the tiny case I'm using for the S110, so carrying some equipment isn't a big issue.

If I wanted to make you homesick, I'd link to something like this or this or, if I was feeling really vicious, this guy running Bald River Falls.

You bastard! Although, dang it, I didn't bring my laptop today, so I can't put up my photo of the "Sweet Cheeses" delivery van, one of the reasons I prefer this area.

Dan,

Via Bifurcated Rivets, there some digital filters to simulate standard studio filters.

'Course it's a Win32 thang, but it does seem to clean up some of the "heat" in some of my shots. There's no "digital polarizer" but LOTS of neat filters.
