ring out the old

2003-01-01 01:17:42+00 by Dan Lyke 4 comments

Diane offers three things she did for herself in the past year. I like that, it beats the silly "New Year's Resolutions" thingie by celebrating stuff that actually happened. So, three things I did for myself this year:

  1. Got a new job. I kept my trials and travails at my old company secret, so secret that some readers thought I was unemployed, because I was somewhat embarassed to be working there, and over the year I stayed there I grew increasingly uncomfortable with their corporate ethics. Eric gave me a little reminder that it was time to move on, so I joined Alvanon and feel much more productive, and much more comfortable with the company.
  2. Lost weight. I'm now back to a sub 34 waist, closing in on 32, and I've got myself a set of weights that I carry from the ferry to the office every day to work on my upper body, since my legs are doing okay from the mad "oh crap I've got 18 minutes to cover 2 miles to catch the ferry" dashes.
  3. Learned to spend money on myself. Now I need to work on moderation a bit, but I've gotten comfortable with treating myself occasionally.

What did you do for yourself last year?

  1. Discovered that I was 'OK' thanks to some friends (new and old).
  2. Lost weight.. toned up a bit.. I was wearing 36's this week. Next step if for them to be loose. It's easier to eat sensibly when you are happy. Calories are an opiate.
  3. Made a lot of new friends and rediscovered how important that friends (new and old) really are.

  1. Swapped out my car for a newer one that is more comfortable and useful.
  2. Went back to school and embarked on my resocialization.
  3. Finally established a professional presence on the web, instead of just hosting my resume at my personal website.
Unfortunately, my current life situation has me feeling that the majority of my accomplishements (excluding the three above) for the year have been, or are in the process of being, undone :-(

hmmmmm

  1. liquidated stock holdings and bought another house
  2. got involved in local community & politics
  3. held my nose and just made money(unrewarding fashion)

4.(bonus points) 2002 was a rough year for me and people around me but I can remember half a dozen times in the year where I stopped smelled the roses and realized my life is more charmed today than most can hope to achieve in a life time. I hope that I have gained perspective and wisdom along the way.

Todd brought up a point: We had a great business year. It's almost embarrasing.
