Tampopo

It's totally out of left field and completely hilarious. If you enjoy asian films of any kind you will like this. There are several sub stories that interleave at a level you almost never see anymore. It has something for everyone whether it be using live shrimp as a sexual prop or cooking the perfect ramen. Tampopo is a 10 out of 10 on the flutterby wetness scale. It's all good.

Some of the same cast appear in A Taxing Woman, which is also quite enjoyable, though not to the same degree as Tampopo.

I've seen it, and I completely agree it's a great movie. It's a good mixture of the classic Samurai Genre and Ramen Noodle House. (If you haven't seen it, it's funny enough to make these two work together).

My wife and I stumbled on Tampopo some years ago, and fell in love with the films of Juzo Itami. Since Mrs. petronius is with the IRS, we also loved both Taxing Women films. Finally a few years ago we saw the director in a personal appearance at the chicago film Festival, showing Supermarket Woman, a satire on the marketing of Japanese food. Alas, Itami, died in 1997, by his own hand.
