Dim bulbs?

Silly question for a Burning Man project: Anyone know of a 110v dimmer that will, when it gets power, fade lights up to some intensity over a few seconds? And then perhaps back down, but that might be asking too much. Jeanne's got an idea, and I'm trying to figure out how to do it with off-the-shelf parts.

repeating or a one shot with a trigger (a button)? What kind of load (it makes a difference)? Watts controlled and whether it is inductive or not..starting loads.. For example: A 100 watt incandescent bulb, a 500 watt motor.. a 5000 watt halogen.. a 60 watt flourescent..

And the Crude Rube method would be a variac (Variable Transformer) with a motor controlling the knob..

Check out Xmas tree lights. Some of them have pretty sophisticated dimmers and are generally very inexpensive.
