April Fools stuff

I generally avoid the April Fools thing, but Brad is doing a particularly good job of it today.

And you "shave the ounces" cycling weenies might be interested in the FasterCardtm, everyone else who hasn't dealt with the "carbon fiber handlebar tape" crowd can skip it.

Hiya Flutterby Gang, drive by posting again. Happen to be vacationing in Windsor while the girls are out of school (no it's not insane to take a vacation 40 miles from your own home. The entire downtown has gone through redevelopment and in addition to some pretty slick planning and disneyesque old town store fronts they made the entire downtown a 802.11 hotspot B & G!!!

Why am I posting here....oh yeah...the obligatory April 1st link http://www.google.com/googlegulp/

Although 'FasterCard' is a joke, I'd pay extra for an heavy duty card with a swipe that does not go bad. I have to get a new card every 3-4 months.

Which Windsor? The one just south of Detroit, or the one just south of me?

If the latter, drive five miles north -- it's just darn gorgeous here right now. There's a couple of places with free Wi-Fi, but the city council couldn't get enough downtown merchants to agree (drat it!) to cover the plaza area.

Just south of you *waves in kitchen kitchen window* have gotten used to "borrowing" peoples bandwidth. Healdsburg is an accidental "hot spot" due many merchants discovering that their wireless routers "work" right out of the box all you need do it plug them in to the power and "funny wide phone cord" and they are setup for wireless(yay them) (yay me). Many wineries are at this same stage as well. Tim's been giving away bandwidth at that oversized bookstore he has over there too but I was especially impressed that a public entity actually "got it" that free bandwidth is as welcoming a nice park in the center of town.Yay Windsor...I'll be back and promise to donate my dollars to your merchants

Not just merchants -- homeowners, too. Our next door neighbors have a wide-open access point. We've offered to help them lock it down but they've never taken us up on it. Ditto for someone right next to my office. The only officially free Wi-Fi in town is at the library, but that doesn't mean that there aren't a few dozen or more places in town where it's available.

Healdsburg as a public entity gets it, and went to the trouble of surveying plaza businesses to see about installing AP's on top of the buildings. Unfortunately (or as least this was the version of the story I heard), the owners wanted more $$ to rent that "space" on top of their buildings than the city wanted to pay. So, no joy, and no official public Wi-Fi.

I'll be back and promise to donate my dollars to your merchants

I know I live in a tourist-oriented economy, so all I can say is "Yay!" and please bring your friends.

*loves hijacking threads*

Love Healdsburg too, in fact it's the town(obviously) that Windsor is try to copy. The Bear Republic brewery is a lot of fun although I humbly(well not so much) make better ale in my garage. Found a couple of good coffee shops "Flying Goat" & "Bagley's" that seem to serve coffee from taylormaidfarms.com that seems to be right up there with peets.com

Oh, and us H'burg locals do have a fun time reminding the Windsor people of that! "Come visit us, we're the real thing, not the faux ripoff..."

None of us are beer drinkers, but we still eat there all the time. It's a great place with good food.

I know the Goat (both of them), but I don't know a Bagley's -- and this is a really small town. Do you mean Bagley's Bistro/Marketplace (in Windsor) instead?

Ment Cafe Noto(Windsor) don't know why Bagley's popped into my head. I blame the time change.
