A guest rant from Todd: The World Outside of Sigraph

Well let's see. Dan mentioned www.sgi.com but I'm not sure if he got the numbers but they are expecting to layoff 3k people (this is a 9k person company), so things are a bit grim there. They are focusing on getting into the Intel box biz and I have been ranting about them needing to get into the more low end market but this move to make fancy clones....They are going to get CRUSHED by lean agile PC makers. I know people at SGI and it's nice cushy hi-tech place but not agile! and not lean!

www.linuxexpo.com was kinda interesting. There is definitely main stream interest there (intel, orcale,IBM) but it also kinda felt like bizzaro world where you have vendors handing you slips of paper where you download the software for free but you can buy the manuals or a Tshirt. ACK! I'm very interested in open source but I want to "sell" my work not a Tshirt about it.

www.redhat.com went public yesterday at $14 a share (it's trading at 74 3/8 as of this writing) and made the big splash. There are some good articles on www.salon.com and www.slashdot.org about how the people that actually worked on the code were offered pre IPO stock options and denied accounts by Etrade....
