A fascinating article by a 30 something unmarried Indian woman living in the United States about marriage and Indian culture (alternate source).
At a recent dinner party, when I was trying to explain how single-minded
Indian parents can be, my friend Jaidev jumped to the rescue. “Imagine
you are on a safari in Africa with your parents,” he said. “A lion
strolls by, and then perhaps a tiger. Your mother turns to you and
says, ‘Son, when are you getting married? You have a girl in mind?
What are your intentions?’”

A great article. I recently saw the film "Bride or Prejudice", which updates Jane Austen to modern India, London and LA and is conceived as a Bollywood/Tin Pan Alley musical. Quite delightful. It covers matchmaking aunties, trying to find dowries for 4 daughters, and good Indian boys who go a little nuts when they move to "Amrica". It is interesting that to the UK based director Los Angeles is seen as more exotic than Amritsar.
