Worth reading all the way through: Too Much Joy: My Hilarious Warner Bros. Royalty Statement (Via MeFi, among other places).

Still more reasons you should buy your music directly from the bands you see perform rather than waiting for the leaches that are the major labels to suck all the value out of them.

I feel guilty - I got a copy of Raising Sand by Robert Plant and Allison Krauss for my birthday. I think it came from Amazon. Good album... But, somehow, I think Plant & Krauss are doing OK by the labels - at least, I'm sure Plant is.

At the same time, one of my favorite groups, The Beastie Boys, sell directly through their own website and even bundle FLAC downloads with CDs. I also just ripped a new OGG copy of Merle Saunder & Jerry Garcia's Blues from the Rainforest, which is ONLY available directly from Merle. I wish more musicians would make FLACs encoded from their masters available.

Oh hey, Too Much Joy! I have one of their CDs. They were pretty good. I didn't realize they were still around.
