The article reeks of money, but he seems to have come to a pretty reasonable conclusion. You can't punish your kid for something like that, not proportionally.

Hmmm... Since "Eric's Life" came up as a category... My own Ferris Bueller moment involved a 1972 MG Midget that my father got for $500. Like all LBCs (Little British Cars) of that era that relied on Lucas electronics, my father had to rework the entire electric system before it would run well enough for me to under-steer a turn and side-swipe a high curb. The replacement original MG wire wheel and quarter panel cost more than the $500 he originally paid for the car. And took the first two paychecks of my first job ever (washing dishes at a restaurant in South Austin). I also paid my way through driving school that Summer.
