Bay to Breakers

The "Bay To Breakers" was run yesterday. Best quote goes to SF Mayor Gavin Newsom:

However, the mayor did have one gripe: "I didn't see any naked people. They had alcohol checkpoints. I felt like I was in another Bay Area county.''

pictures of assorted costumed (and naked) people.

Carmen and I walked the bay to breakers yesterday, and geek that I am, I carried a GPS and my digital camera and snapped pictures all along the route. We did see some naked people, but probably less than last year.

One bit of amusement: after the finish line, there was this guy with a bullhorn yelling at people to repent or his god would get them. As I rolled my eyes, a gentlemen wearing predominantly hot pink strolled by, and caught this guy's attention. He repeatedly asked why this guy was wearing pink, was it to "appear different", or "special", or even "deviant". Our pink gentlemen bowed broadly. He then went on to ask "why are you doing that? why are you just calling attention to yourself? Do you really need attention that badly?"

At which point I could contain myself no further. I shouted back "Says the guy with a freakin' BULLHORN in his hand?" The people around me sniggered.

I continued walking, but surprisingly, that actually seemed to shut him up. I didn't hear him say a peep while I was in earshot.

There were alcohol checkpoints, but there seemed to be no shortage of beer either before or after them. The Beer-a-mid was serving drinks well beyond the checkpoint, perhaps because they had a sign which flipped between "Beer-A-Mid" and "We love SFPD".

Oh, the maps and tracks I made were done with GPSVisualizer, which is a dandy website for converting tracklogs and waypoints into various formats suitable for websites.

Dang it, I had a message going with a link to your entry and a couple of my favorite images, but somehow it got lost. This (or two images behind this summary) might be a better link for browsing your images, and I liked these drag "queens" (look pretty butch to me) in fron the Gold Club.

Maybe if he'd started back with ordinary citizens of SF maybe Mayor Newsom would have seen some naked people. Still, it's an interested quote given ING's efforts to get people NOT to go naked. Maybe the mayor can persuade next year's sponsor to drop the "No Nudity" bit - it is San Francisco after all.

Roger Me at start of run (naked). Me dancing near the end of the run (naked).

Is it just me or does "ING" sound to everyone else like someone's trying to suppress a curse? As in "that ----ING sponsor of the ----ING Bay to Breakers is ----ING up the nudity. ---- them!"
