So we met at Bill's house. Bill lives in an Eichler subdivision, an architect who figured out that people who lived out in the 'burbs wanted space for themselves, so the houses present a garage and a wall to the outside world, most of the front yard is enclosed in a courtyard where it's private.

And so we all climbed into Bill's minivan and went down to the Marin headlands to do a little hiking. The headlands are the north side of the Golden Gate. Since the San Francisco Bay is such a great harbor it's always been well protected as a military asset, during World War II they put in some huge gun emplacements, the group wandered through the loading tunnels to one such:
