Which brings us to: Trust.

The simple answer is: Don't. But the other answer is that most people don't care and do. And that trust is very specific, and specific to the sorts of information being shared.

An example of why trust both matters and doesn't: Back in the late '90s every one of us had written a blogging tool. Mine was used by Hotwired. Ev and the gang at Pyra came along with Blogger that asked for the user's username and password for their FTP sites. And people gave that to them.

Blogger is still out there, every other blogging tool is fighting for second place. (And there's a special place in hell for Wordpress and its plug-in architectures and the security nightmares that creates, but that's another rant.)
