Got Milk?

2002-08-09 16:55:05+00 by TC 4 comments

A woman is forced to drink her own breast milk to prove it was not a threat to other passengers before boarding a plane. Note the woman is not filing suit but just wants the morons punished. I guess it could have been worse. It could have been somone transporting urine samples or something.

I read this the other day and was astounded. Can you think of any reason why (a) milky fluid in (presumably) something resembling a baby bottle or insert looked suspicious (especially when the woman carrying it also had an infant in her arms), and (b) why they didn't allow her to give it to the baby, instead of making her drink it herself? (OK, maybe the baby was asleep.) Furthermore, why didn't she refuse their moronic demands, on the spot? (The incident occurred April 2 and we're just hearing about it now?)

I actually think lactating mothers ought to try their own breast milk at some point... but not when forced to, in public, by security personnel with peabrains, power complexes, and warped notions of what constitutes a security risk. (Some of us never got any when we were babies, and it's pretty interesting and tasty stuff.) I liked Ron Kuby's quote:

"The number of middle-aged, lactating white women who passed through al-Qaida training is probably negligible," he said.

Something deep inside of me cringes whenever I read something like this, because I have met these kinds of people, and I fear that they are inescapable. Is it that stupid people gravitate towards positions of authority, or that authority makes them stupid and arrogant? Are these the kinds of people who, in other societies, would blow themselves up in shopping centers or massacre villages because they've let themselves be vaccinated by Western missionaries? blah blah blah Nazi blah blah blah No Soup For You...

...(But alas, Irony has been declared dead)...and it's that fallacious Legal=Right equation that seems to do it every time, and the legal is turning out to be such a reed in the wind that the perceived "right" has no link to any sort of reason or (dare I say the "m" word?) morality (Which is a word I really don't like using because it's one of the ones that winds up being used as a weapon against the people who aren't doing harm to anyone except possibly [and then mostly only in the eyes of others] themselves.).

And it's people like this who make me fear bringing a child into this world, and who breed more than those of us who fear their kind... Thank God for natural selection (Do you think I could offend both the Fundamentalist christians and the people who put the Darwin fish on their cars if I put that little phrase on a bumper sticker?)

Phillip: And it's people like this who make me fear bringing a child into this world

I'm hoping mine will help balance things out.

Thank God for natural selection (Do you think I could offend both the Fundamentalist christians and the people who put the Darwin fish on their cars if I put that little phrase on a bumper sticker?)

No, because the Darwin fish people usually have a sense of humor.
