Microsoft lock-in

So I got a spreadsheet emailed to me in Microsoft's new "Office Open" file format. I went searching around and discovered that since Microsoft Office on the Mac doesn't support it, Microsoft supplies a converter that's supposed to convert this file format to the older XLS file format, and OpenOffice.Org will read that. So I download the converter, and it doesn't recognize the file format.

Hey, great "open format"s, Microsoft. The two readers you supply for them don't work, and apparently they're not even readable on the Mac.
