I didn't want to pay the $5 to join metafilter, so I'll post my comment here:
Because of air pollution, you can only see three states from Rock City - maybe four on a clear day. Because of the curvature of the Earth and the relative flatness of Northern Mississippi, you really could only ever possibly see six states.
However, you can fairly easily make out all SEVEN Wal-Marts in the Chattanooga area from Rock City!
