under pressure

Things I've learned about myself: When the fully loaded moving truck has had the brakes lock up and gone into an uncontrolled slide towards the house and/or a rollover inducing drop-off, and pumping the brakes frantically won't unlock the wheels, what's the first thing to go through my mind? "Huh, I should have gotten the full damage waiver."

But we survived with only minimal damage to the basil box, and got a different truck for subsequent trips that worked fine.

I left a note for the rental guy this morning, and then saw him come out and open up the shop as I was biking off, so I stopped to talk to him. He read my note and offered to refund the full rental, which was way more than I expected.

There'll be a longer tale involving communications problems and over the top unexpected heroism from a Guatemalan day laborer named "Julio" (and of the brown trousers inducing incidents, watching him come bolting up the driveway behind the tenuously stopped truck with a large rock to cram under the wheel and thinking about what I do if the truck slips was one of 'em) in getting said truck back out of the driveway, but we got another truck (borrowed from a neighbor) for Sunday and everything went smoothly.

don't you hate moving? that is right up there with, "damn, there goes the dining room table extension off the back of the truck! daaammmmnnn, there it goes all over the road in a million pieces!"
