I was surprised when I went to Costa Rica a few years ago that there were no street signs - even in the capital San Jose. Costa Rica boasts the highest literacy rate in the world but totally lacks street signs.

And honking your horn in Costa Rica means: "Watch out, I'm coming into the intersection!"
