Fantastic Contraption

If you were concerned about high productivity today, you could solve that with Fantastic Contraption, a little game based on a Flash physics engine about getting a piece into a target area. Via Sean Leather.

Once you've solved an area, you can go back to the menu and see how other people solved it. Or you can search on YouTube...

Yow! Yeah, it was interesting to finish a level, then go see how others had done it and have that "whoah, how'd they think of that?" reaction.

I found I had two mental blocks to get over, the first was the idea that everything had to be mobile, building catapults rather than carts (for the "Big Ball" level, throwing the block fast is simpler than a bulldozer that raises the ball (which I also did) or something that pulls the ball back), the second was letting myself see the solution as two cooperating machines.

I've actually been trying to do them in order. I was stuck on "four balls" for a while, but ended up trying many strange contraptions before making one that finally work. I have three left to solve, it was a good way to burn a couple of hours last night while enjoying the quiet and a sapporo or two.
