So I navigated to the MS page that offered the patch, downloaded it (using Firefox) and was told that I had no software installed to which this patch pertains. WTF?

I disabled it when I first saw it and that seemed to be okay. If you disable it, Firefox won't load the plugin anyway. I gather that updates to .NET framework since then have enabled you to uninstall the plugin.
