False Equivalencies, food and sex

The American Conservative: Rod Dreher: Porky Populism is a perfect example of why it's hard to take the modern conservative movement seriously. He writes this long article about the cultural divide on food and class warfare, and then at the very end drops in this false equivalency about sexual freedoms that's just... uh... bizarre.

Yeah, what weirded me out about it was that it seemed like such a great discussion of the food issues, until it went bizarrely off the rails and into the weeds at the end.

Actually, that's a pretty sane article for Dreher and I agree with a fair bit of it, at least until he goes off the rails at the end.

I knew Dreher of old, before he became a Crunchy Con. Apparently he found conservatism and religion at the same time. I always wonder what major seismic event happened in his life to prompt this, since when I knew him he seemed extremely unlikely to embrace either.

I don't know if it's valid to extend not taking Dreher seriously to not taking modern conservatism seriously. That is, I don't suggest that you take modern conservatism seriously, I'm just not sure how representative Dreher's oddities are. He's a sort of special case.
