We are getting closer to the technology for things like auto-focus contact lenses: a one-molecule motor spinning on a one-atom bearing. Damn!

At some point, the actual technology being used will be indistiguishable from "magic" at any level discernable to bare human senses. While I wish for lofty goals with such skills, I fear baser instincts and less elegant needs will drive such technologies.

Who gets to define elegant needs? My iPhone allows me to play Angry Birds or track my blood glucose level. Both can ease my mind.
