Later it occurred to me, how much in that time, that desk was the equivalent of a laptop with email. It was how the ruling class communicated. By letter. Sealed, and hopefully private. Drafts and received correspondence were important targets of politics, war, commerce and romance. As a discrete piece, it hid its importance in plain sight and while it would be reasonably easy to force open, it would be evident.
We may have lost some things in our modern world of how we do email.
