Their customs are not like ours

Norwegian woman visits Dubai, reports rape, now faces prison sentence for sex outside of marriage and illegal consumption of alcohol. And frankly, I love y'all who live in flyover country, but I feel like this sort of thing is a threat every time I leave the Bay Area.

She has been pardoned, but still...

I'm very glad to hear of the pardon. But the fact she was charged in the first place is a huge problem with me.

I've travelled a lot in my life. Had contact with more different cultures than most people. And, if I ever was before, I am very much NOT a cultural relativist as a result of all that.

I don't care who or what someone worships. I don't care how they go to the bathroom or what is considered rude at the dinner table. None of those things make a bit of difference in my mind. But the way a culture treats those it considers at the bottom of the social order, most especially women and children, determines its worth to me. Thus why I have a love/hate relationship with Japanese culture.
