Hey mobile app developers: If the app store doesn't charge for it, I want a good explanation of why. #customernotproduct

Long Facebook thread about this from which I will excerpt one of my comments as I tried to clarify myself.
Yeah, I may install the Redwood Credit Union app because I'm a customer and I understand their business model, and know that the app makes me a happier customer and reduces their costs (I harass their humans less, abuse their ATMs less). I installed the CVS app for similar reasons, makes it easy for me to upload pictures to them for printing.
Taminations is free, and awesome, and I tell everyone they should install it. I think it's free because Brad Christie is doing his part to help square dancing (and I totally appreciate that!).
Square dance conventions seem to happen at Marriott hotels a lot, I can see more stays at those hotels in the future, so I've signed up for their loyalty program, and I almost installed the Marriott app yesterday, except that it wanted to run at startup... I always feel like Marriott is looking for ways to wheedle more money out of me, so...
And, as I mentioned, Twicca was what triggered that complaint today: Shawn said good things about it, I went to the page, and... the only thing it said about supporting it was that I could learn more by going to some in-app menus. It could be some people who want a better Twitter app and are willing to put their own time into building it, or... I just want to know.
