I crossed the southern US on my way to CA late in May. Knowing about the checkpoints, the farthest south I got was on I-40, which, AFAICT, stays outside the "Constitution Free Zone."

On the other hand, crossing into CA near Needles, the temperature was 108F, and the CA fruit cops had shade and swamp coolers - I tried everything I could to be detained there long enough to cool off (I was on the motorcycle), but couldn't convince them they needed to keep me in the shade any longer than it took to say "on your way."
