Because we need to buy airline tickets shortly: The best time to buy airline tickets is on Sunday 57 days in advance.

What happens if 57 days in advance of your flight is not a Sunday?

I've recently rethought how I deal with airline tickets. Similar to toll roads and paid parking, I've realized that the savings aren't always worth the effort. And the effort is a slippery slope... Before you know it, you're stuck flying a red eye to airports 100 miles from both your origination and destination, with three layovers, and just what you can get through TSA, squeezed into a carry-on which is stowed in the back of the plane when you are in the front (making it that much harder to make your connections).

The 57 days is definitely the case when flying into smaller airports like Chattanooga or St. George, UT. The prices on those flights quickly escalate over the cost of flights to Atlanta or Las Vegas even if you factor in the cost of a shuttle bus ride.

And something I just found out... most rental car agencies do not charge extra if you rent a car from one airport and return it at a different airport as long as they have regular services at each location. We just rented a car from Alamo in Orlando and returned it in Fort Lauderdale.

They address the "Sunday" in the article, Tuesday's the fallback.

And it's nice to know about rental cars, but... after Seattle, I've also learned that it's probably a good idea to take public transit out of the airport county before you rent a car; the stadium tax there was obscene.

I also rent via Hotwire. Their rates are pretty hard to beat. I paid $156 for a full size car for a week in Florida over Thanksgiving. I also buy the tank of gas up front if it's offered. The only exception would be at airports where I know exactly where the gas station is and I know I'll have plenty of time before my flight. I had a nightmare once trying to gas up a rental before returning it at the Tampa airport.
