I saw games like this in October in Sydney Australia. They are loud, bright, and a bit intimidating. I can see how the Japanese would like them. The impression I get is that they don't mind looking silly, as long as it is in a social sanctioned setting, like the Karaoke bar. Japanese game shows are filled with humiliating forfeits for losing, like getting dumped in a vat of oatmeal as the cost of a very small prize, like a pen-and-pencil set. You are expected to be a good sport about it all.
