Tugboat pictures redux

2002-02-19 17:29:35+00 by Dan Lyke 10 comments

Justin has an update on the disappearance of those tugboat pictures. The person who put up the page got hit with a $3000 bandwidth bill. I'll get PayPal information shortly, Justin is trying to track down the original photographer to get permission, and I'm doing some back-of-the-envelope calculations to see if we can put them up on this server.

Let us know, I'll chip some in and follow up with the many people I sent the link to...

Um... I never got the link. What's all this about? I followed the links to read about what has happened to the original poster, but I don't have any idea what the pictures depicted - other than a tug boat.

The images were of a tug boat on a flooding river hitting a bridge, getting turned sideways, capsizing, pushed under the bridge, then righting itself. Pretty amazing sequence of shots. Justin[Wiki] thinks he can find the photographer, and I need to do some estimates and make sure Meuon is cool with the bandwidth, then we'll try to put it up here. By the way, Shadow, if you're around, you got the originals and your animated GIF?

If it gets bad.. we wrap a an advert for 'higherbandwidth.net' around it.. :)

Look folks, these really cheap web hosting providers are just trolls for this kind of thing. they LOVE IT. Those pictures would have to use a STEADY 3mbps for a WHOLE MONTH (That's 2 T1's!) to be charged $3K, and that's with a large margin (real tier one bandwidth from a backbone that intends to stay in business is 300-500 per mbps, add a little for fixed costs.. and a 50% margin.. and the rough number is $1k/mbps)

Get the pics.. we'll host it.

Shadow sent me the pics. If Justin comes through with permission from the photographer we're good to go.

Okay, I can handle the pressure.

Hey, meuon, are you folks considering expanding? I'd happily donate the use of a bunch of square footage here in El Paso in exchange for a little bandwidth... :-)~

Heh. meuon, I just discovered there's a fiber running right along a property I'm in the process of buying, with a junction box at the corner. I couldn't have planned it much better. And I didn't even notice it 'til yesterday.
