A couple of weeks ago, while at work, we were introduced to what is apparently Toyota's new factory car alarm. We heard this honking outside, but it wasn't a steady, repeating honk. Instead, it sounded like somebody was being mugged or carjacked or having a heart attack or something and that they were desperate to get people's attention. Irregularly timed honking.

We went outside to try to locate the disturbance and eventually determined that it was coming from a parked car across the street. Damn thing went off at least a dozoen more times throughout the day.

At first I thought it was a great idea, since nobody pays attention to standard car alarms any more. Until one of my co-workers pointed out that now people will start to ignore that kind of honking too...

Its been done already. The alarm I had in my Porsche had a serial port that you could download alarm tones and check all kind of other stuff.

I figured. It's just that every time on fourth street and a car alarm goes off, it's like business meetings back before Nokia won the dick size wars on small phones; when one rang, everyone had to drag out their phones to show off the gadgetry check to see if it was theirs ringing.

I miss the CHIA lunches where we all piled our gizmos on the table. meuon usually one. Nowadays it would be a little boring. Gee, a cell phone, a Palm Pilot, a GPS receiver...

Is there any real gee-whiz portable gadgetry out there anymore? Sure the Blueberries are cute but I remember Dan and Todd scribbling notes to each other on their wireless modem equiped Palm Vs almost three years ago. Nothing new there...
