New PowerBook

2003-01-08 05:10:02+00 by Dan Lyke 2 comments

Well, ya can tell it's MacWorld[Wiki] time again, all the Apple faithful are waiting for... well... Announcements were made today. Paul Boutin writes about Apple's New iSUV, comparing the new PowerBook to the Cadillac Escalade (thanks to Dave for those links). Made of "aircraft-grade aluminum" (um... Isn't nearly everything? How come the only people who can't get aircraft grade aluminum are the folks supplying the out of service ferry?), this 17" display behemoth is only an inch thick, so while you'll knock people over if you try to turn around while carrying this thing on the sidewalk, it'll look like you're just an art student who doesn't yet have a portfolio.

Seems like a perfect time to recall that beautiful Car & Driver review of the Cadillac Escalade we linked to back in March. Let's update it for '03: "There are a lot of things you can buy for $3299. The Apple 17" PowerBook is one of them."

I'm lusting.. It's a poor laptop at 17".. It's a great portable or space saving desktop system. And not long ago, ANY good system was in the $3-4k range. Think more like a dual-screen laptop.. Personally, I hope it sets a trend... and the price on such things drops. -But then.. it is an object of lust and desire..

Having carried my 3.5lb 1280x768 Fujitsu P2110 around for a while I'm now sold on small. I do not understand the 12" PowerBook, 10.9"x8.6" for just 1024x768? And I assume it's got the same low-travel keyboard that the iBook[Wiki] has? Scoble summed it up:

You know, I gotta hand it to Steve Jobs. He's the only one who can make a six-point-eight-pound $3300 laptop seem like it's better than getting laid. Any wonders why Apple has only 3% of the market share?
