iPod mania

Love is: Your Girlfriend wants to 'go to the mall' the day after Christmas.. in Atlanta... and you go.

In reality I had a good day, didn't spend much except food and gas. I'm not much of a mall-ite. But there was one amazing store, with a line out the door and lots of people buying things, the day AFTER Christmas. The Apple store in Lennox mall was shoulder to shoulder.. And what were they buying? iPod!. What is amazing is that they are announcing the new Mac's as a product "from the creators of the iPod". I have to give Apple some kudos for marketing and hope they continue to do well.

Me? I just stuck a 1gb CD card in my Zaurus, wishing I could stick a 20gb drive in it..

Why were people standing in line? Were the iPods on sale, or were all those people just disappointed that Santa hadn't brought one for them? I'm not asking why iPods; I'm just curious as to what was different on the 26th that hadn't been the case on the 24th.

In my experience, 20 Gb isn't big enough. I upgraded from a 20 Gb iPod to a 40 Gb iPod a couple months back because I'd run out of room. But then, I use it for a lot of things besides music.

BTW, the iPod link should probably be going to this page instead.

Looking at the crowd as I elbowed my way through the store, I'd say it was youngsters (16-25) that got cash for Christmas.. or had enough.. and were buying what they wanted.

1gb on my Zaurus works.. and as it also does other things (PIM/802.11/SSH/Browser) it's enough for my immediate needs.. playing music while I have headphones on in the colo room (otherwise the whooshing white noise from the 2 Liebert HVAC units drives me nuts). Still, I wish it was more. I normally listen to music off of desktop systems, but am approaching the idea of a 'media server' gradually.

brave man, you deserve a medal for shopping on the 26th. most men would "quiver" in their shoes at just the thought of going to the mall "the day after" :>

And many women these days as well. I count myself among the lucky spouses to be married to a person who does most of her xmas shopping during the year, and has no desire to go anywhere near the malls during the latter half of December.

Laughing.. Nancy just e-mailed me about her "bad rap on Flutterby". I figured she'd just post her retort here. And I have to admit, it took very little arm twisting for me to go on a road trip Sunday.

Now: On the geeky side.. while listing to techno on headphones from my Zaurus.. (Sony MDR-V600 Headphones Rock!) - A couple of people at work were blown away by my old Zaurus.. Too bad Sharp did not market them as a MP3/Movie Player (they'll even do MP4) or a game machine.. It's just starting to soak in how much marketing a gadget is what makes or breaks it.

I have to point this out... The iPod has incredible market share (80+%; here's an older article ).

So, that means that if you have a high density MP3 player and you don't have an iPod, your akin to a Mac user in a PC world?

And using a Linux based device is like being an Amiga or BeOS user.. After digging around, am drooling over the iRiver H340. Hmm.. Next big check that comes in...

Didn't mean to slam Nancy ;-) My point was that it's not automatically a gender thing.

That store is always packed...been to a couple of seminar's with a Mac friend...I really would like to grab a Mac for video work primarily but it's still at the point where every question my friend asked about a limitation...the answer was "oh, you need to buy this $400 software to do that"
