13 digit ISBN

ISBN going to 13 digits. Given how my book buying habits have changed, the real question is: by that time, will books still matter?

Reading the fine print, it looks like ISBN is effectively merging with EAN, the 13-digit code that subsumes UPC; the code space for ISBNs will only double.

And just who was the wizard who decided that the check digit for ISBN, if the MOD 11 = 10, should be X?
