Way cool faith in their ability and knowledge of the terrain.

This reminds me of trailbuilding in Prentice Cooper about 8 years ago. I met these two guys: locals--- raised on the mountain, live on the mountain, seldom leave the mountain, know little but the mountain.

They were "volunteers" for the Forest Service and a group of us were scouting places to run trail along the ledges, crests, and washes that overlook the river. Those guys would race down the washes, hopping off the rocks and grab small trees to spin or bend their way down ledges then sit somewhat patiently at the bottom to wait for those of us who were a bit more cautious. Of course they knew the terrain like the deer, but still.... as I said to one of the other guys with me then, "There's a certain comfort, I guess, in not knowing what an anterior cruciate ligament is."
