Where America Fails

Detroit News Story - they cancel school indefinately.

But then, the other side is, these teachers should do it the capitalistic way: get better jobs elsewhere or doing something else rather than strike (if they were capable). But the whole system and concept is a failure, and that is a shameful thing. [putting asbestos suit on]

Yeah, I've got mixed feelings on teachers's unions.

On the one hand you've got the basic union issues that I've always had a problem with.

On the other hand... well... I've seen some truly fucked up school boards (the old ladies who write letters to the newspaper? Yeah, them...), and the nature of education and its tie-ins with academia means that there are quite a few completely clueless gits in administration.

It doesn't surprise me it's Detroit. Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has basically ruined the city financially (let's see ... the Detroit Zoo is closed. Belle Island Aquarium is closed. Most libraries are closed. Half the buildings in Detroit are abandoned) and there was recent talk of the State of Michigan coming in and taking over.

It's amazing just how far gone Detroit is.
