Koo-Ki Sushi, candy that looks like sushi. Saved off here for the next time I need some inspiration when I'm playing with chocolate.

OMG that is fantastic stuff, how could you do this to me?! Now I will have to arrange a CARE package for the college kid and his girlfriend.

Oh! After further investigation, I note that this place is local to me! If anyone would like someone on-the-ground to visit and report back, I will take one for the team.

To get back on topic here, I visited them last week. Very tiny little showroom, back room full of busy workers making absolutely amazing looking stuff. And let me tell you, the products are FAR more realistic and attractive (and deceptive!) in person than in the website photos! Sadly, they were "out of" almost everything in the place (that is, they'd taken orders online that would take them the rest of the year to fill and they wouldn't be taking any further orders until Jan.). Since they had almost no stock on-hand in the store, I suspect it's more of a made-to-order place; I'd hoped for a showroom where I could point and choose some items as gifts, but no. I think it's a "walk in, give them your order in person, come back later to pick it up" kind of place. I believe they would give tours if requested; next time I go back I will take a camera for further photos but really, photos don't seem to do the stuff justice. It really is amazing looking. (And when I get a chance to taste it, I'll report on that, too. :-)

There are a whole bunch of things south-bay that I want to do. Give a yell next time you're going down there, maybe that'll be the impetus to get in the car and head south.

Went back today. Bought some late Christmas gifts. They were very (VERY!) well received. Samples were available at the shop under a little glass dome, on the desk in the very tiny front showroom; they had a spicy/sweet Christmas maki pair where one had a spicy red chocolate center and the other had a creamy green melon center, which were unexpected tastes. I asked the woman there if you'd be allowed to come take photos sometime, or watch them work and ask questions. She said there might be trade secrets involved, but you're welcome to call and ask the owner, Karen, if she'd mind you coming by. She also mentioned that they're being profiled on the Food Network tv show, Sugar Rush this spring, so I recommend moving promptly before they're overwhelmed with orders and reporters and looky-loos. (Unlike us, of course!)
