Think of rounding up thousands of 18 to 21 year old males, get them in physical shape so they feel invincible, and them give them fancy new toys like B-17's, machine guns and side arms and tell them to go! Must have felt like a giant playground - until the shooting started coming back the other way but in some ways it must have been the adventure of a life time.
