Can anybody tell me some inside secret to Captcha? I've never managed to submit an acceptable response to one of their challenges. Just spent ten minutes and many profanities trying to get access to support at Western Digital.

It just worked as intended, you left them alone.
I understand it's use in many many places, and for every one of them, there is a place where it is entirely stupid. I can hear the committee meeting discussion in my head:
The Boss: "Oh yeah, and we need those "Captcha" things on all the form submissions"
Web dude: "why?"
The Boss: "Because you gotta have them to be high tech, and everyone else has them".
We will not edit your comments. However, we may delete your
comments, or cause them to be hidden behind another link, if we feel
they detract from the conversation. Commercial plugs are fine,
if they are relevant to the conversation, and if you don't
try to pretend to be a consumer. Annoying endorsements will be deleted
if you're lucky, if you're not a whole bunch of people smarter and
more articulate than you will ridicule you, and we will leave
such ridicule in place.
