Cuckoo Eggs
Via /.. It's always refreshing to see people resolve problems without resorting to violence, lawyers or politicians. So it seems that with all the battle going on in the courts and in senate hearings over the sharing of music online that the answer to the problem might lie within the cuckoo egg.

One obvious solution to the Cuckoo's Egg Project, with a nice side effect, is for rippers/encoders to begin signing the recordings.
The side effect of signing the recordings is that for a signature to be worth anything you have to build a trust for the signer. Who better to sign recordings than the artist or their label?
It still leaves the payment question open, though.

if you're lucky, if you're not a whole bunch of people smarter and
more articulate than you will ridicule you, and we will leave
such ridicule in place.
