A few days ago, Jay linked to this deconstruction of the retouching in Redbook cover featuring Faith Hill, and this page on retouching portraits.

To see the whole retouching thing taken to it's creepy extreme, check out the series on retouching kids "beauty" pageant contestants that starts here (From this Sensible Erection link).

I'll leave it to you to make the commentary on what this says about cultural standards of beauty, age, and realism.
