Hey, it's the leveraged '80s again! Sam Zell used ESOP deal to buy Tribune company before driving it into bankruptcy.

I've heard Sam Zell speak a few times, and he is delightfully candid. He is in it for the money, and your risks are outlined upfront. Zell did not drive Tribune Co. into bankruptcy, the Chandler Family from whom Tribune bought the LA Times managed that by demanding a buy out of the corporation. Zell has been trying to sell off some of the parts of the business, like Newsday and the Chicago Cubs. (apparently our governor tried to blackmail him over the stadium sale to get some reporters fired) The upshot is that nobody else came forward to buy Tribune.
