JWZ on work habits

JWZ: Watch a VC use my name to sell a con.

I did make a bunch of money by winning the Netscape Startup Lottery, it's true. So did most of the early engineers. But the people who made 100x as much as the engineers did? I can tell you for a fact that none of them slept under their desk. If you look at a list of financially successful people from the software industry, I'll bet you get a very different view of what kind of sleep habits and office hours are successful than the one presented here.

What was the Netscape Startup Lottery? Did you participate and win?

I participated and lost. The HTML browser I wrote in 1993 did not go on to be the core product of a company which went public with a huge IPO.

Of course we all know about Netscape...

"It's better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all..."

Hats off to you for going for it, Dan!

I don't think Dan realized he was participating in a lottery at the time. He was just hacking some code. I don't even think Netscape knew what a lottery they were in... It's that rock star programmer thing.

Dan did get his name in the credits for film about the time that company had its IPO. So he got some fame...
