Crystal Cox not a journalist

Judge rules, again, that blogger Crystal Cox is not a journalist. You know why? Because she ISN’T a journalist. Interesting essay on Oregon's journalist shield law, libel, extortion, and bloggers.

The whole notion that we have a separate class of "journalist", with different sets of legal obligations towards disclosure and testifying and speech constraints, has always seemed weird to me.

I'm totally with you that most journalists today are transcribers and distributors.

I have no comments on the Cox case, but if it is correct then there are very few journalists in the US. To be a journalist, according to the judge, requires investigation and distribution. Most of the people that we call journalists today are transcribers and distributors, and thus do not qualify.
