15 years ago, the internet was an escape from the real world. Now, the real world is an escape from the internet.

As I ruthlessly culled my Twitter feed yesterday, I was thinking about this. How back in the '80s, I went online to escape the mundanity of "the real world", and how now "the real world" has flooded online, and now I search for connection in meat space.
